Representing the people of the East Grinstead area

Who are we?

3 Counties Group was establised in 1988 to represent the views of people and local groups in many East Grinstead area localities concerned about threatened large-scale development and issues of traffic relief. It performed particularly effective functions during major housing/roads initiatives in 1988, 1991 and 1996.

Throughout much of this period, Michael Vickers has been its Chairman. A 30-year resident of the East Grinstead area, he has guided the Group through many ‘development battles’, and in this most recent assault by ‘developers and money-men’, he sees an all-too-familiar pattern. ‘You cannot force development where it will not go. But the County (WSCC) and developers never listen and never learn. So they’re trying again, and this time with a new cast of Councillor-supporters, several of whom were opponents to the development when the last big push was made in the early 1990s. It has been sad to see liberators become oppressors. A not-uncommon theme of this 21st century, I suspect.’

3CG started with some 16 local groups, increased to 25 and now comprises about 18. Each represents a geographic area ranging from major residential areas to surrounding villages.

3CG operates under its Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Committee. Membership is open to "Representatives of any group or organisation whose aims and objectives are compatible with the Aims of the Group", and also to "Individuals who have a special interest in and accept the Aims of the Group".
